The space Map(C, X) of holomorphic maps from a Riemann surface C to a
complex manifold X arises is several contexts. Often, one allows the
domain C to vary in a family of Riemann surfaces that includes
degenerate surfaces. In this talk I will show how the structure of
these spaces of maps can be described in terms of families of Hardy
spaces. The constructions are natural and surprisingly elementary.
